As this post is going out while I’m on holiday, I thought I’ll have a bit of fun. In this one I’m going to pick my Villa dream team, from players that have been at the club while I’ve been supporting them.
GK – We’ve had so many over the years and there has only ever been one that has stood out in my mind – Brad Friedel. The mammoth goalkeeper was with us for 3 years and played over 100 consecutive games in goal, seeing us finish 6th for two of those three seasons.
RB – Matthew Lowton – A player that went under most Villa fans’ radar when Paul Lambert suddenly favoured right-winger Leandro Bacuna (???) he played all but one game of his debut Premier League season of 2012-13, he was a rock at right-back and most notably scored that goal against Stoke.
CB pairing – of Martin Laursen and Ron Vlaar. Two internationals who really showed what true leadership is when given the armband. Both brick walls in defence, shame they both left for their homelands while still at Villa.
LB – Probably one if the first players I saw play was Wilfred Bouma, and I remeber my dad being absolutely amazed at how good he was – real shame his career was cut short at Villa though injury.
RM – James Milner – he was only at Villa full-time for two years, but every single time he touched the ball, there was a sense of calmness and control about his play. Also, I have a Milner printed Villa shirt from 2008.
CM pairing – who else but Gareth Barry, Mr Reliable, he made over 360 league appearances for us in the 11 years he was at Villa Park, being captain for a quarter of those years. To go along side him I’ve made the choice of Stiliyan Petrov, not only did these two play side-by-side for Villa, but Petrov took Barry’s captaincy when he left.
LM – I’m going with the unpopular choice of Jack Grealish, while he may have is head in the clouds off the pitch, he knows what he’s doing on it. He’s also Villa through and through, as a product of our youth academy.
ST – John Carew – 6ft 4in, 15 stone pile of muscle that spearheaded our attack for all of four years, he and Gabby were unstoppable on their day.
ST – Christian Benteke – the man, the myth. An absolute bargain at £7 million. I’ve never seen anyone transform Villa Park in the way he did, he’ll always be remembered for his services to Villa, even if his career didn’t turn out at Liverpool.
